FIVE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS ON STUDENT LEARNING

I would like to suggest that the following five questions (Priddy, 2006, Annual Meeting of the Higher Learning Commission) are fundamental to our understanding of and our ability to improve student learning at St. Ambrose.  Note that the emphasis is student learning, not assessment (other than a means to improve student learning!

  1. How are our stated student learning outcomes appropriate to our mission, programs, degrees, and students?
  2. What evidence do we have that students achieve our stated student learning outcomes?
  3. In what ways do we analyze and use evidence of student learning?
  4. How do we ensure shared responsibility for student learning and assessment of student learning?
  5. How do we evaluate and improve our efforts to assess and improve student learning?

Finally, ask yourself how we are informing our various publics, both on and off campus, about what and how well our students are learning.
